No you probably aren't wrong ... and I have put the original source of the query up, without realising it was, but then I guess it helps others who come along sometime in the future to look at it.  ;D :D

Added, and where is Waigogoe?  Never heard of that either.

Waigogoe does not sound even remotely like a Maori place, mispronounced and bad spelling I think! Can't image where this would be!

;D   "Waigoegoe" is solved rather more easily.   More a question of "spelling".

From the 1857 Roll - a William F. BLAKE -- Waigoegoe - Settler

PapersPast has a number of references to "Waikowkow Saw Mills".

e.g.  1864 ELLIS John - Waikowkow Saw Mills (Attested by W.F. BLAKE)

Then there can be found later, advertisements placed under the signature of W. F. BLAKE for Waikoukou Saw Mills.    [Waikoukou being the Maori spelling. ]   ;D

Still working on Okowhitu .  ;)

Hello.
In an electoral roll of 1857, there was an electorate called Lucas' creek, now called Albany.
An ancestor's name is in the list, with his address recorded as "Okowitu". I can't find this place anywhere and suspect it may have been misspelled (another householder is recorded as living in "Whangaproa") or no longer in existence.

Hi Charlie ... is your ancestor the "John BROWN" recorded on that electoral list ??

Hi again Charlie

*  Have you checked later electoral rolls to determine where your ancestor resided ??
Did he remain in the Lucas' Creek (Albany) district  ??

If the Waikoukou is actually Waikaukau, the Okowitu might be out West Ak, could be written as Okowhitu.

Actually, if you look at others on the list, quite a few of them clearly do not live in the electorates they are listed ...see the Matakana section, those Queen street addresses (and Waiheke!)are some distance from Matakana.

So Okowitu could be anywhere .
If we knew where he was next found it would be helpful I think.  (Hope).

Hi everyone and thanks to all.

Yes, John Brown is my ancestor. He turned up next in Drury south of Auckland. A son was possibly born near, or had his birth registered in, The Wade (Silverdale) around that time.

Hokowhitu is a possibility though I couldn't find it in a NZ Gazetteer (LINZ) site in that area.Same with Okowhitu.

I'm still working through the suggestions so please keep more coming.

Again, thanks to all.

There was a block of Maori land called Wakoukou, near modern day Riverhead.
