Charles James Francis DOYLE Cape Breton
« on: Saturday 10 November 18 18:43 GMT (UK) »
Looking for descendants of Charles James Francis DOYLE.

Charles married Margaret Moffatt 04 Nov 1928 at New Caledonia, the Manse, NS. Margaret is the eldest daughter of my great aunt Jessie Robertson. Contact between the families (Robertson, Moffatt) seems to have ceased in the 1930s or 1940s.

I have gathered a small amount of data on this family which I would be pleased to share.

Brian

Hi,

There is a border crossing Aug. 29, 1924 for Margaret Moffatt destined to Boston, Mass and her Aunt Mrs. C.D Merriam. On the back of that form there is a notation "Form I-404 to N.Y. 12/12/194? "(could be 43, 45, or 48), and "Form Letter 10/9/4? Name Mrs. Matta"

Pretty definite that this is my cousin Margaret. It would seem that either she was widowed young or had the Doyle marriage annulled (or was bigamous!). It also appears fairly certain that Margaret was childless.

Thank you for pointing out these sites - I'll share the information with my Moffatt relations.

Hi,

I don't think Margaret was a young widow.

On the 1928 marriage of Charles and Margaret, Charles gives his parents as Samuel Doyle and Sadie Devison.
I think this is the family in 1921 Census

Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, 703 Sterling
Samuel, Sadie (Sarah), children John, Daniel, Charles, James, Samuel, Joseph, Miles, and Katie.
http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1921&op=img&id=e002904485

There is a death of Sarah Doyle in 1957 Glace Bay, widow of Samuel Doyle
Son Charles is the informant, and his address is 703 Sterling, Glace Bay.

1957 Canada Voters List, Glace Bay, 703 Sterling
Doyle, Eunice, clerk
Doyle, Miles, miner
Doyle, Mrs. Miles
Doyle, Mrs. Sarah, widow
Doyle, Charles, electrician

The last sighting for Charles, 1968 Canada Voters List, Glace Bay, 703 Sterling
Doyle, Miles, miner
Doyle, Mrs. Miles
Doyle, Charles, pensioner

Gotta love these families who remain at the same address. ;D

I think we have a black sheep sighting...

Margaret would be the first bigamist on the tree in years, since that Knox guy from Pontiac County, Quebec.

Interestingly, Margaret appears in Hamilton in 1977 to attend the funeral of brother Crawford. No estrangement, apparently among the siblings.

Margaret's marriage document from 1928 contains a couple of deceptions. She gives her age as 27. She was 23 and knew her birthdate to the very day on other occasions. She gave her mother's maiden name as 'Robinson'. What woman wouldn't know mom's maiden name after living under the same roof for 23 years?

Wonder what was going down.

Blessings,
Brian

On the other hand is annulment, about which I know little.

Mr. Doyle is Catholic, Margaret Moffatt is Presbyterian. The marriage ceremony appears to have been conducted at the Presbyterian Manse.

In the year 1928 would the Roman Catholic Church have considered annulment of a marriage of one of its members simply because it was solemnized by a Protestant minister?

Seems unlikely, but I don't know.

Vito Motto's WWI draft registration card says he has a wife & 2 children, so perhaps he & Margaret's marriage (if there was one) was his 2nd as well.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-81N3-6YQ?i=2767&cc=1968530  Possible matches in the 1920 & 1930 census:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MJY4-3KN
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X4P6-RPW

Social Security death index has Vito's death in Feb. 1949.  The Social Security application index says he died Feb. 1949, but the claim date was 27 Sep. 1949.  The New York, New York death index has a Vito Motto age 57 who died 2 Sep 1949.  Not sure if something was bungled here or they were different guys.

I think I'd go with 'bungled' rather than duplicate Vito Mottos. Cousin Margaret remains a bit of a mystery, but not so much that we can't live with it.

Don't know what happened to Margaret's first husband or to Vito's first family - Anna & Jacquelin disappear after 1930 as surely as does Charlie Doyle. Whatever the details, Margaret experienced New York City when she was in her prime and then enjoyed Florida sun in her retirement. Plus she had the health and finances to attend brother Crawford's funeral in her 73rd year.

I am told that one of my younger Moffatt cousins is interested in genealogy. I intend to pass on everything we have discovered to the Moffatts for future research.

Thanks again,
Brian
