The OED cites this reference from the Guardian of 20 April 1920:

" Taking into account the rate of exchange..this brings Monte Carlo hotel rates, for English visitors.., down to the level of a Blackpool company-house."

For what it’s worth  think it is number 41, any street anywhere and shaw house is the house name.

Is it a coincidence that Shaw is a district of Oldham, has the feel of a charity outing of some sort to me.

Mike

It could be possible that the Buckley and Crabtree families from Shaw opened a boarding house in a holiday place. Blackpool most likely.
Then again, it might be nothing like this  ;)

Well I was nearly right  ;)

Well done Eric - a great find.

I believe that Oldham wakes began with the fourth week in June, so probably Monday 22 June 1931. The people are not in Sunday Best for going to church.

There seem to be a lot more adult women than men. Maybe some of the party had already sloped off to the pub. ;D
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
