Help with Company shown on Photograph - Buckley and Crabtree
« on: Sunday 11 November 18 15:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
I have a photograph that has a group of workers and their children outside a large house with the company name Buckley and Crabtree, 41 Shaw House. My wife's father and grandmother are on the photo so we can date it to the late 1920's. The family were all from Oldham so the address is local to that area. An internet search reveals nothing about the company so any information would be most welcomed.
Regards,
Paul
I lived in Ardwick, Manchester in the early 1960s as a small child and much travelling of the world has now led me to want to know more about my roots. Carter, Beckwith, Connolly, Heron and Kelly are all names that form part of my family tree.

Do you mean that the house has a sign on it with the name and address or that the name and address are added to the photo?
Is it a formal photo?

The building has the name on it (a small plaque by the door) and its a large group (perhaps 70 plus) of workers and their children.

I understand that they worked mainly in the cotton mills.

On the photograph are the people dressed for work or an outing, perhaps?
Radcliffe wondered about a Holiday home - are there any more details in the photo?

No info on the company but there is a Buckley New Mill in Uppermill near Saddleworth that I can see on an old map - it’s been converted into apartments. It’s bottom left on the map below Saddleworth Station.

There has been for sale a “Shaw House” on Shaw Lane which is a stones throw away - see link below

Could be something or nothing
