Thanks All,

Here is the photograph in question.

I wonder if that is a boarding house at a Holiday resort?
There is an advertisement on the wall - ‘Royal Pav..’ Pavilion perhaps?
Charleys and Gloria Sw? Swanson maybe but she wasn’t in Charley’s Aunt, I don’t think.
Possibility?

Thanks,

I also checked the poster and believe it might be the Royal Pavillion Theatre in Blackpool showing Charleys Aunt. You are right that Gloria Swanson was not in the movie although there was a version made in 1925.

I am starting to think that this is a holiday home for workers and their children from the two named mills in Oldham.

There is a house next door.
I am thinking it is a Boarding house rather than a holiday home for mill workers and that is the name of the proprietors.

Adding to my doubts about this- everyone would be on holiday at Oldham Wakes so there wouldn’t be business during the year for the home.

Thats an interesting point and its not as if they could change the name sign every few weeks to suit different circumstances.

From what I know of Lancashire mill owners, they didn't offer many benefits to the work force, and would consider giving time off for a holiday would be more than generous.

The film "Charley's Aunt" was released in December 1930, so the photo could date from 1931.
There were five Gloria Swanson films in the 1930s
