uniform/regiement help
« on: Sunday 11 November 18 15:43 GMT (UK) »
I Had an old painting given to me, Upon trying to restore it, after taking the backing paper off, I discovered this Chap hidden underneath.
Any information would be great. It looks as if the button is a Harp, but cant be sure.

Thanks
Mark

Do you know the origin or the previous owners of the painting?
Could they provide some information?

Is there anything on the reverse of the photo?

Nope, Absoluty nothing about previous Owners.
This photo has been glued to the back of a painting so Cant risk trying to peel it off, as will damage it.

I don't know if this helps but is there any connection to Ireland in the family?

Check this link, scroll down to the first set of buttons. Very simple design, like the photo.

What you have is an over-sketched enlargement of a smaller photo. This was quite usual before photo enlargers became popular in the 1920's. It involved taking a photo of the photo & enlarging it which resulted in loss of definition hence the need for over-sketching. So I would say this was taken before the mid 20's.
