Got him on FindMyPast he died in Hoboken NJ  9 April 1920. Other details home adddress tie in exactly. Much easier when you have a date range. Thanks all for your suggestions. Now to find hist burial

If he was at sea again, you might find some more records of him. Other than what you can find on FindMyPast, there's crew members listed on FamilySearch in the Ellis Island records.
For example (and I don't know if it's your man!)
William Reid on the Vestris, arriving NY 20.3.1919
This chap was 54, Irish, engaged at Liverpool. It says he has "Sailor on right arm" (I think they mean a tattoo!), I think your William had a sailor's head tattooed on his right arm (army record).

Yes that’s him J thanks. I wonder if he died after a later sailing. Presume that he wouldn’t be in port for that long. Unless he signed up for another ship and the went back to the Vestris. Interesting accounts of the Vestris sinking in 1928 with great Loss of life. Posted a message on a NJ forum to see if there is a burial for him

Nothing to indicate he died during WW1. On saying that his widow is applying for his medals in 1924. She refers to him as her late husband. This is after they had been returned for correction in 1923. It's possible he returned them but died before getting them back.
Her address at the time was 116 Wellington Rd. Park Rd. Dingle L'pool.
His Regts. were 1st. Garrison Battalion R.I.R. with whom he served in Gallipoli hence his 15 Star.
Then Lab. Corps, R.E. & finally Inland Waterways & Docks (R.E.).
