sorting out who is who
« on: Monday 12 November 18 12:15 GMT (UK) »
I've come across a problem which I'm sure many others have experienced. Not living anywhere near Cumbria I rely on the websites that provide ancestry data but find it difficult to verify if a name is the right one. EG: Take Robert D King Br: 1844 in Whitehaven. I have seen census records which bear his name and that's no problem. I've seen birth info which confirms he was born in 1844. However when I wish to investigate further say death, marriage, children, occupation, etc it's difficult to ascertain if the Robert D King I'm looking at is indeed him as the records on display only show his name, and no others that would allow me to accept or reject it. This is made worst as I've found other R Kings and RD Kings born in the same location, in the same time scale 1883-1885. Any advice. MK

'Take Robert D King Br: 1844 in Whitehaven'

Presumably this is the birth registration you refer to
Birth Sep qtr 1844
Robert Dixon King   mothers maiden surname Hodgson
Whitehaven    25   162

Can you tell us where you have 'your ' Robert on census

Look a broader family members.
Children living with grandparents, brothers/sister-in-law, nieces, nephews etc.

not just for your man, do his namesakes too.
When you've eliminated all you can, it may be that you need to purchase a certificate or two, but we're very good at eliminating possibles.

Can't understand why you've referred to an 1844 birth at first and the said you are confusing it with others b 1883-1885 (40 years later?)

The marriage in 1878 gives his father as William, a Doctor Medicine, whilst earlier censuses show Robert’s father as a Cabinet Maker.
This Robert is a Mariner on marriage to Mary Emily Barr.

I am not sure that anything I have posted is your man but presumably you have seen the 1897 death.
There is a newspaper snippet dated 28 April 1897 which seems to refer to a Coroner’s inquest describing Robert as a Shiprigger  :-\
The age here is not quite correct though.

Thank you for all the replies. You have hi-lighted the problem. I too have the same birth details as mentioned and accept those as in this case (Horray!!) we have the mother's name whom I can relate to. The other dates I refer to are a mistake (senior moment) and should have been written as +2 years either side of the above birth date. It's not possible to follow the siblings or other members as they all seemed to have been very independent and really no record of him ever being with anyone at any later date other than early census forms. I'm following the seaman route but again, like the marriage records available to me on-line I only get 2 pieces of info A Name and a date. This does not help as there are other R & RD Kings listed who I'm sure are not related- I think. Even a 3rd known name would go some way in resolving the mystery. I must point out I just use him as a example to make a point. There are other members of the family whom I have not yet said for certain are related to me for the same reasons.

I think you need to post details of the other people, on the appropriate county boards, together with all known details and see if rootschatters can sort the individual queries for you.
