Police in Westbourne, Queen's Park in 1900?
« on: Monday 12 November 18 12:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
I have been trying to find out why my ancestor Olive Legg was born in Bedfordshire when her whole family lived all their lives in Dorset and Hampshire. I have now found out that there is also a Westbourne in Queens Park, Bedford! I have a document that says that Olive's father joined the police in 1900 in Westbourne which I have been assuming was in Dorset. Olive was born a few months after he joined and her POB was Queen's Park Bedford.
I now think that he joined the force in Bedfordshire (although I don't know why) and that I have muddled my Westbournes. By 1901 he was back in Hampshire so I now need to find out if there was a police training place or anything similar in Queen's Park. Any help or advice would be great.
Thanks
Alison

How do the dates work out?

I see that Olive later gives her birthdate as 4 April 1900; birth registered Jun qtr 1900 Bedford.

Her parents Edmund & Beatrice (Beck) married in Dorchester district, also Jun qtr 1900.

When in that year did Edmund join the police?

Her father joined on the 14th of March 1900 in Westbourne (that's the spelling I have been given with no county attached). Beatrice was three months pregnant when they got married in Dorset and the beginning of October 1901 their second child was born in Hampshire so they had left Bedford. Beatrice's sister Olive Westcott was living in St Paul's Bedford in 1901 and their mutual brother was lodging with her so there were family there already.

Olive gives her birthdate as 4th April 1900 - registered June qtr 1900 (as per avm228 post)
Marriage transcript gives date of marriage as   31 May 1900 at    Buckland Newton
Next child born October 1901

So Beatrice had recently given birth to Olive when she got married

Bedford is not my area, but is there really a place called Westbourne there or is it just a street name?

I’d think it odd for a Dorset/Hants man to go to Bedford to join the police, rather than joining locally.

Perhaps more likely that Beatrice went to stay with her sister (Olive) to have her premarital baby (also Olive)?

Hi AVM 228

It hadn't occurred to me that Olive might have gone there on her own, I have been very blinkered about this. That's the beauty of getting fresh eyes on the problem.
I have just ordered the birth certificate and it might give more clues so I will see what turns up but thank you everyone, my mind is racing with possibilities now.

I see that Olive Westcott & her brother Ernest Beck were at 64 Westbourne Rd, St Paul’s, Bedford in 1901.

RG13/1493/98/39.

Her absent husband is a railway guard, and most other men on the street are employed on the railways or in engineering occupations (perhaps there was an engineering works nearby).

Couldn’t see any police officers on a quick skim through.
