James Jinks c1795 - 1806 Pleck, Walsall Staffordshire
« on: Tuesday 13 November 18 03:25 GMT (UK) »
Looking for parents of James Jinks born 1795-1806 Pleck, Staffordshire. He married Sarah Nicholls on 10 Apr 1836, St. Mary, Walsall, Stafford. On the 1841 census he and Sarah have 3 children and with them is Esther Jinks age 87 who I assume to be his mother. The only baptism I can find which maybe him is for a James Jenks, 22 Oct 1797, Saint Matthew,Walsall,Stafford. Father William Jenks and Esther. james died in 1876 age 81. Sarah died in 1899 age 84.   Thank you.

The original 1841 census is not clear but if you check family search it shows Esther Jinks age 87-91.

So I guess you have the correct baptism, plus James son William was present with him on the 1871 census.

I have the 1841 and 1871 the names there are Jinks but the baptism I found is Jenks, it's probable they are the same people but not conclusive.

Maybe the name origin will help?

Last name: Jenks. Recorded as Genge, Jank, Janks, Jenk, Jenckes, Jenkes, Jenks, Jinks, Jynkson, Jinkson, and others, this is an English medieval surname, but one arguably of Norman-French origins. It is what is known as a 'back-formation' and was created from the early personal name Jenkin.
