Death in Gateshead
« on: Tuesday 13 November 18 18:36 GMT (UK) »
I have stumbled across a problem which needs some solving

Lydia Keyte  born in 1805 in Aldgate High Street and baptised at St Dunstan Stepney
She later married as a Minor in 1825 in the absence of parents who had recently died.
Pallots Marriage Index shows the record of marriage to Stephen Keyte  born 1803
Gentleman of 15 The Minories

There is a record of her on the 1841 abnd 1851 census living in London

No further records until I found a record of her death in 1865 in Gateshead
She is also recorded as being in an assylum Borsham in Gateshead in 1857 to 1859

Did she live in Gateshead pre this assylum stay

Also in 1868 there is a record of her will probate when she left money to Stephen Keyte of 215 Shoreditch

He was by this time nearing his own death in 1870 but had meanwhile acquired another wife  Mary Ann  and a number of children.  I have not found a record of marriage
altho recorded she was a wife on the 1851 census.

Was there divorce in those days

Does any one have any records of Borsham and on the 1861 Census in Gateshead, Durham for Lydia Keyte nee Bingley

If you meant Bensham Lunatic Asylum ( I can't find any reference to a Borsham Asylum in Gateshead)
then the enumeration for it starts on Piece 3800, folio 41, page 29 and continues through to page 33

The inmates/patients were all referred to by initials only, but if you page through you will be able to see if there are any likely entries.

In case you have not seen them there are a couple of newspaper articles dated 11 August 1841 which refer to Stephen Keyte. They are about a Mary Ann Keates and a case of begging. This part is of interest:

" Mr Combe asked Keyt whether the woman by his side (ie Mary Ann Keates) was his wife.
He replied in the negative. He did not know where his own wife was. He had no doubt she was alive".

This is from the London Evening Standard - other article is in the Evening Mail. There is a lot of detail.

https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk. I think first three look ups are free, so select carefully!

And also on FindMyPast if you have a sub.

Hi Gwendoline

The newspaper articles can be accessed through the British Newspaper Archive. I believe you can register for free and receive three free articles for doing so.

The newspapers can also be accessed via FindMyPast.(depends on sub.). Some libraries also provide access.

Also worth noting that earlier articles in the 1830's suggest Stephen Keyte became insolvent/bankrupt.

Noting that Lydia's maiden name was Bingley , baptism records suggest parents were John and Lydia. There is a possible death for mother Lydia in 1825 and two records for her in the index to death duties, one dated 1825 and the other 1828.The latter names Lydia Keyte, Minories as the admistratrix of her estate.
