James Mason
« on: Tuesday 13 November 18 23:57 GMT (UK) »
I cant find any record of my grandfather in the services during WW1.  He was born in 1883 - in Glasgow - and he was occupied as a toolmaker.  Im not sure if this would have been classed as a reserved occupation, or if he had any medical reason why he was not drafted. He was unmarried with no dependents at the time of the war.  Any ideas?

Over 60% of WW1 service records were burnt during the WW2 blitz

Assuming he would have served with a Scottish regiment there are 8 James Mason's on the Medal Roll Index.

No way of knowing which is yours (if any) without a regimental number or regiment

Thanks CaroleW - I guess it might be something I will never know.  Unfortunately he died when my father was just 7, so there is little available information coming through on what his participation was. Given his location, I imagine if he did enlist, it would be with the HLI.

Looking on the MRI with a regiment Highland Light Infantry shows 4 James Mason’s.

Did he have any other christian names or was he just  James?

Thanks for checking this CaroleW. He didn’t have any middle names.
