Joseph Bright Gooch, mariner born UK 1832, possibly resident in Australia.
« on: Thursday 15 November 18 08:28 GMT (UK) »
Hello all

I just came across a thing I noted down a few years ago but did not follow up on:

An English ancestor named Joseph Bright Gooch, born 1832, disappears from the UK records after 1851. The 1851 UK census says he is a mariner with the East India Company.

There is a record in Ancestry (somewhere) that says he is part of the crew on a ship going from Sydney to Wellington in 1862.

So could I ask people familiar with Australian censuses etc to see if they can find any reference to this man in Australia. I have checked the records I know in NZ and found nothing.

Cheers
-David C

We don’t have censuses like the UK.

He’s the son of John Burton Gooch and Susannah Bright?

You can search here, month by month: http://marinersandships.com.au/shipdate.htm

I did a general search of the site for Gooch, but no joy.

He didn’t die QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, WA.

As a merchant seaman, he could have ended up anywhere. ;)

He volunteered for the Bengal pilot service in June 1847 and left Gravesend on the Ellenborough on 18 July 1847 per Allens Indian Mail.

Thanks all for scouring Australian records.

Jamjar, interesting archive you have listed. Several of Joseph's brothers were mariners so this could have wider importance to my search.

ShaunJ, you always seem to be the one to pull the rabbit out of the hat.
Allen's Indian Mail is a great resource.
Joseph's brother Thomas appears in there, 1846.

Oh yes, and they are all sons of Captain John Burton Gooch & Susan Bright.

Not being familiar with birth-death-marriage records in Australia, could I ask someone to help me locate the birth of Herbert Sherlock Gooch in the 1880s, Queensland.

He is the son of a JB Gooch, who (as you have seen) is the man I am trying to learn more about.

Thanks
-DC
