Geneanet
« on: Thursday 15 November 18 13:06 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I came across this French (at first I presumed it was German as the pages were in German from my search) genealogy site https://de.geneanet.org/ whilst googling for some names and seemed to be able to view a few results before the website wanted me to register for a free account to continue.

Does anyone have experience of this site?
I think it was just name and email required to register and it would be a free account but wasn't sure if it was committing me to anything else.
I don't really want to take out another paid sub right now, but this looked interesting and potentially useful.
thanks

Lisa

Lisa, having traced my mother-in-law's ancestors back to former East Germany I think I will find this very useful.

Update a few minutes later, there's even an option to change the website language to one of your own choosing. I went for English.

Martin, this morning I was looking at the map feature which shows instances/frequencies of a surname in say 1800, 1900, etc, and it was possible to zoom in to refine the results.

Yesterday I managed to get a list of people with the same surname in the same place (quite small) but couldn't seem to recreate that today.

Hope you find something interesting,

Lisa

It is free for the basic version. I think it is French, not German though.

Yes, I was just reading more about the website and saw it's French, it must be because I was looking up a name and place in Germany that I got a search result with pages in German and incorrectly assumed it must be a German website.

thanks

I use Geneanet all the time - some is pay per view and some is free - it is primarily a French research site but you will find most countries have surname research - this is my homepage - note the en before geneanet - so this is the English site you need

https://en.geneanet.org/

so for instance - if you were looking for a Frederick Pollard from your tree - you would get this

https://en.geneanet.org/fonds/individus/?go=1&nom=pollard&prenom=frederick&prenom_operateur=or&with_variantes_nom=&with_variantes_nom_conjoint=&with_variantes_prenom=&with_variantes_prenom_conjoint=&size=10
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

Thanks Garstonite,

I registered for the free account yesterday and was looking at the surnames on the map, a very interesting feature.  It certainly gives you some different possibilities or directions to look in.
