Problematic Couple!
« on: Thursday 15 November 18 15:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a marriage between a Richard Ray and a Catherine Hume which took place in Holy Trinity, Sunderland on the 6th March 1871.

Richard was a mariner, who had been born in London c1845 father given as Richard Ray a mason.
Catherine had been born in Sunderland c1847, daughter of Robert Hume, a miner.

Witnesses were a William Walker and Martha Bennett, Martha was Catherine's sister.

Catherine's mother, Elizabeth, had been born in Jarrow, Durham c 1828.
I am looking for a marriage between Elizabeth and a Francis Bennett (originally from Nottinghamshire) that may have taken place around 1848.

Francis and Elizabeth had two children in Sunderland prior to 1851; Martha, born on the 22/11/1848, and Mary Ann, born on the 7/9/1850. Their mmn was given as 'Hume'

However, the 1851 census also finds in the family a Catherine Moore, born in Sunderland c1847 - I believe that this may have been Catherine Hume - but cannot find a birth/baptism for her under 'Hume' or 'Moore'

Francis and Elizabeth went on to have another four children; William Henry born 19/2/1852, Thomas, born 16/1/1854, Elizabeth, born 21/3/1856, and Robert, born on the 14/2/1858. All had the mmn of 'Hume.'

Can anybody find Elizabeth's previous marriages (if she did marry previously), Catherine's birth, or Elizabeth's marriage to Francis?

Thank you

Sue

I think the 1871 census shows that the Catherine who married Mr Ray was indeed the Catherine who ha appeared as a child of Francis and ELizabeth on the previous censuses:

1871
Ropery Lane Sunderland
Elizabeth Bennet 51 widow washerwoman bn Jarrow
Catherine Ray 23 dtr married sailors wife bn Sunderland
Mary Ann Bennet 20
William 19
Thomas 17
Elizabeth 15
Robert 13

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

What strikes me is the moveable date of Elizabeth's birth

1851 Census  1829 Jarrow
1861 Census  1818 Jarrow
1871 Census  1820 Jarrow
1881 Census  1820 Jarrow

There is an Elizabeth Hume 25 on the 1841 in Bishop Wearmouth but she appears to be recently married to a John Hume ?
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

The enumerator may have just made a mistake on the 1851 census,  If her daughter Catherine was actually 4, then it is perhaps more likely that she was conceived when Elizabeth was 27 rather than 17.  Interestingly, Francis also aged 20 years in the decade between 1851 and 1861.  In 1862 a 47yr old Francis Bennett died in Sunderland, which suggests the 1851 ages were in error.
Perrins - Manchester and Staffs
Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester
Comer - Manchester and Galway

I may have a possible for Elizabeth, not that I can find her marriage to Mr Bennett.   ::)

There's a baptism 12 May 1819 in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Jarrow for Elizabeth Humes, daughter of William, pitman, and Mary, daughter of Robert & Elizabeth Young. She had been born 20 April 1819 and present at the birth Elizabeth Sanderson & Catherine Humes.

William Humes married Mary Young 19 April 1818 in Jarrow parish church.

Other children to the same couple
Edward Gascoyne born 16 June 1821 bp 9 July 1821 in the Methodist Church, same people present at the birth
Dorothy born 21 Aug 1823 bp 21 August in the Methodist Church, present at the birth Catherine Hume & Jane Robinson. Dorothy was buried 9 April 1825, address Jarrow Row.
Catherine bp 16 Oct 1825 St Paul Jarrow
Robert bp 15 Jan 1828 St Paul Jarrow
Jane bp 18 April 1830 St Paul Jarrow

Likely burial for William aged 33 5 August 1830 St Paul Jarrow, killed by a gas explosion in Jarrow Colliery 40 killed. Address Jarrow Row.
Marriage of Michael Hume & Catherine Gascoyne 11 May 1794 may account for son Edward's middle name.

1841 census High St, Bishopwearmouth HO107/310/3 folio 22 pg 38
Mary Hume 30?
Elizabeth 20
Edward 15 sail cloth weaver
Jane 10
Abraham Tyson 5
Isaak Tyson 2
Robert Hume 12
John Nesbet 2
all born in county except John

1851 Ropery Lane, Sunderland HO107/2397 folio 108 pg 6
William Tyson head mar 40 weaver canvas b. Cumberland, Whitehaven
Mary wife 53 b. Durham, Cornforth
Catherine Hume dau 25 b. Sunderland
Abraham Tyson son 16 weaver ap. b. Sunderland
John Tyson son 14 weaver ap b. Stockton
Ropery Lane is the address for the Bennetts in 1861 & 1871

1861 Tunstall Rd, Bishopwearmouth RG9/3772 folio 58 pg 17
William Tyson head mar 50 flax weaver b. Whitehaven
Mary wife 60 b. Cornforth
Isaac son 24 flax weaver b. Stockton
Catherine Hume step daughter 35 laundress b. Jarrow

Haven't as yet found a marriage for Mary Hume & William Tyson. The Robert on Catherine's marriage cert may have been a borrowed family name to save face over the lack of father.

just spotted the baptism of Abraham Tyson 22 June 1834 at St Paul, Jarrow son of William, weaver, and Mary of Jarrow Row.
So the marriage of William Tyson & Mary Hume(s) should be between 1830 & 1834, but she is Hume on the 1841 census.
