Changing from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.
« on: Thursday 15 November 18 17:19 GMT (UK) »
Thinking about changing to Windows 10.
Can I be sure that all my documents will safely transfer?
I am especially worried about my Family Tree which is with Family Tree Maker version 11.
When I changed to Windows 8.1 I lost some of my information.

Make sure you back up ALL your files, photos etc and make backups of of your family tree maker file to another location for example: the cloud, another drive,  a flash drive or external hard drive before making any changes to your pc.

Personally, I didnít lose any files and none were corrupted but you should be doing the above action on a regular basis anyway as any windows update/ virus infection/ hardware failure can cause serious issues unexpectedly.  Many people make two sets of backups especially for very important files.

The only thing I'd be concerned about is the Family Tree Maker version 11. as that is 2003 isn't it and so probably not supported anymore?  It certainly won't sync with Ancestry if there is a problem.

I would also save a gedcom file just in case.

No, FTM is no longer supported but i donít have it on my present PC. I did have it on my old pc which I updated to Win10 and I donít remember any issues. I always use rootsmagic as my main family tree programme and I only installed the last version of FTM as a trial.

If I remember, there are loads of old posts about the demise of FTM

Hi

FTM

v2011 runs on W10     as does v2006 (even)  and others eg v2008.
However, as mentioned, they will not connect with ancestry.
They are not supported by the company who bought the rights to the software.

Some of us (Rootschatters) keep working (W10) versions of various (older) tree software packages.

Ensure that you take multiple copies ( at least x3 ) of all tree/genealogy data.
Do not keep the copies on the same drive nor on the machine you intend upgrading.Take "Backups" and exported gedcoms.

Remember that standard specification Gedcom files do not contain media ( pics/docs )

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone who replied with very helpful advice.
I like usung family tree maker as I find it very easy to use, or is that just because I am familiar with it?
