Is he Lemuel or Samuel?
« on: Thursday 15 November 18 19:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

Attached are two extracts from the 1685 Will of Richard Baker of Stratton St Margaret. I'm hoping someone can clarify if the name of the first brother mentioned in extract 1 is Lemuel or Samuel.
I've attached a second extract from the Will for comparison. The first letter looks like a L it would be good to have this confirmed.

I've tried to find christenings for the children of Lemuel/Samuel and on one record the name looks to have been transcribed as Samuel and on the other it's transcribed as Lemuell - hence the confusion.

Any clarification/confirmation would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Matt

My take would be Lemuel given the 'S' on the following line at the beginning of Shillings.  The two letters look rather different to me.   Also the 'e' at the end of the name looks like the letter following the first letter.    Could be wrong - often am.  (and the 's' in shillings is lower case.  :-\ - but other upper case 'S's look different in the clips shown.

I remember being taught to write upper case 'L's like that. (but not in the 1600s  :))

Lemuel

Because of  the VERY clear ‘s’s in Stratton St Margaret.

Hi all

Thanks to everyone who's replied so fast to this. You've all confirmed my initial suspicion which is great. I did think the name was Lemuel so it's great to know I was right.
