Venables / Kemp / Bedworth
« on: Thursday 15 November 18 21:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Please could you help!

I have stated tracing my family history but unfortunately the line stops at my grand dad!

My grandma however can be traced back to pretty much the 1500s.

Here’s what I have:

My dad Malcolm Venables (1951-2003) had 4 brothers. Alan, Peter, Paul and Anthony (Tony). There parents were Margret Pearl Kemp and Eric Venables.

Margrets line is easy to find following the Kemps including William Kemp who died at Broadmoor hospital in 1888, through the Stone family into Fox (Foxe) and into Vaux.

However! Eric stops at Eric.

What I do know is he had a brother called Jack Venables. There’s also no record of Jack. Wether that was a nick name I don’t know. My uncles just knew him as Jack. Apparently he had 2 sons one called Robert and 2 or 3 daughters.

Eric Venables was born 29 Jan 1927 in Staffordshire. He died in 1982 possibly Coventry or Nuneaton.

The Venables/ Kemps were largely based around Orchard Street / Marston lane in Bedworth Warwickshire but as Eric was from Staffordshire I guess that’s where his parents and Jack would be based.

So basically I am looking to find Eric’s parents and anything about ‘Jack’!

Any leads / help would be much appreciated

Thank you

Welcome :)

According to Eric’s birth registration (West Bromwich, Mar qtr 1927) his mother’s maiden name was Russell.  Have you looked for a Venables-Russell marriage for his parents?

I’d recommend you look for Eric’s entry on the 1939 Register (on Ancestry or Findmypast) to help you identify his parents.

I would suggest this marriage may be relevant:

Mar qtr 1925 Coventry

John T Venables to Gladys H Russell

...and a birth registration for “Jack”:

John R Venables, mother’s maiden name Russell, Sep qtr 1925 Coventry.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.

Yes I have tried Russell and also another, begins with B ( can’t remember at the mo)

But no luck seeing Eric or Jack on any Census etc..

The closest I have come on ancestry is the parents named Charles and Ada who have Eric named on a 1939 Census address 136 Walsall wood road. But that is all. Still no jack. And no ada / Charles listed as married or on birth certificates

Yes, I think you have been following a red herring with Charles and Ada.

You will not find Eric and John/Jack on a published census, for the simple reason that they were not born by the time of the most recent published census (1911).

Hi, welcome to Rootschat

My grandfather was John, but everyone called him Jack. https://www.quora.com/Why-is-Jack-a-nickname-for-John

1939 On Ancestry they are mistranscribed as Venablee, also Eric age b1924. No wonder you could not find them!
