Joseph Bright Gooch - English mariner in NZ circa 1862 - can we find him?
« on: Friday 16 November 18 07:33 GMT (UK) »
Hello Kiwis

I have a fellow in my family tree who was born in England and became a mariner in 1847.
Apparently he was sent to serve in the 'pilot service' in Bengal, but the only reference I can find of him after that is as crew on a ship called the Rainbow which travelled from Wellington to Sydney in June 1862.

I've just had a look at the NZ newspapers for early 1862 and see from a number of articles that the Rainbow was a ship of 75 tons that worked in the area around Dunedin/Taieri as a tug and as a ferry. In March it was advertised for sale and in May it made a journey up to Wellington via Lyttelton before crossing to Sydney where it was intended the ship would be refurbished and brought back to NZ to continue working as a ferry/tug.

This has implications for tracing my ancestor, Joseph Bright Gooch.
He may have been hired for that one crossing to Sydney but he could also have been
regular crew, in which case he may have settled in NZ.

Can anyone find evidence of him living in NZ?

He was born in 1832.

Thanks
-David C

Nothing on NZ Maritime Index, nor in the Electoral Rolls.

I just saw  "J.B. Gooch" references in newspaper articles for 1897 and 1902 in Australia (via Trove).

The trouble is that this is too late in history to be the man I am looking for.
Could be a descendant but there's no proof.

Is there any way to see if Joseph Bright Gooch is a passenger or crew on a ship arriving in NZ before 1862? I know that there are passenger lists for the early ships but I don't remember where to find them.

No records at Archives NZ via Archway.

Interesting though there is a: GOOCH Joseph Brett

A 'J B Gooch' is mentioned as next of kin in this WW1 file http://www.rootschat.com/links/01n1g/

Joseph Brett is unrelated.

Joseph Bright was born 1832 to parents John and Susannah, I believe.

Hi.

Have you tried searching just CAPTAIN GOOCH.  Papers Past has a number of hits on the NZ ports reports, but as your man was from a maritine family I would not know how many were down this way. It is also a surname linked to early settlers and the Militia. One family settling in the Port Albert community, Kaipara harbour.

In reply #7 there is a link to an article which mentions the 'Trevelyan' & Captain Gooch.

However this was not Joseph Bright GOOCH.

See article re this ship and her captain in the Australian newspaper.....

The master was one Edwin GOOCH.
