Hard to draw a conclusion on either suggestion, Minnie.

Gooch was a surprisingly common surname.

The Capt in Port Albert was a highly respected fellow, by appearances!

This article in Brisbane 1915 tips my bias more towards Australia:

The boy's middle name is Sherlock. Sherlock was a middle name of one of JB Gooch's brothers in England.

There is another land-owning Gooch family in the UK for which the name Sherlock has been a popular middle name too.

Hi.

This is the GOOCH list on the ALBERTLAND historic research.

https://www.albertland.co.nz/ships-migrants.php?surname=Gooch&ship=

From other reading I  believe T F GOOCH held, at one point, a position on the Military Purveyor's Staff and was listed as a JP.

When I first posted I wondered if J. B. GOOCH may have been related, and if by throwing "Captain" into the search mix additional material might have been revealed that assisted the process of elimination or success.

Thank you, Jamjar.  That puts an end to the theory I was composing.

But it raises another interesting connection. Joseph Bright Gooch's father was Captain John Burton Gooch of the East India company, died 1843. One of his sons, John Anthony Campbell Gooch, married in Australia in 1840 (at the tender age of 21).

The middle name Burton was important to this family line and is passed down along several parallel branches even into the 20th century. The appearance of this name in Australia suggests a family connection, either by John Anthony or by some other descendant.

The marriages are all accounted for.
I have these people on my family tree already.
They are close relatives.

The death of John CA is also known, but not so precisely.
Thanks for the detail.

There are now a number of JB Gooches in the picture:
Joseph Bright
and a couple of John Burtons
(and of course others we might not know about).

I would like to separate their stories if possible and see who is who.

Ta!

The full references are:

His appointment - Otago Police Gazette, February 1862, No. 9, page 36.

His discharge - Otago Police Gazette, March 1862, No. 12, page 48.

No further information provided in either entry.

Many Police Gazettes are available to view for free on Archway. This is the link to the relevant Gazette/s

Spades

He didn't last long as a cop!

I just went through the BDMs like everybody else and confirmed for myself no evidence of a wife or offspring, so I regard his time in NZ as probably brief and inconsequential. It would be great to find a ship on which he arrived, 1852-62.

I'm thinking now he probably settled in Australia, despite the lack of solid evidence there.

From New South Wales Archives online index, free to search    :D
https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/police-service-guide
and that leads to https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/search_form?id=31
which includes the following summary
#74
John B GOOCH born NSW 1845, appointed to NSW police 23 June 1868.

The full details should be on the reel #3043 at NSW Archives Kingswood facility as per that online index.   That reel doesn't seem to be listed on the ARK's collection  https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/archives-resources-kit-ark

Copies
Microfiche copy of [7/6213] (1862-1904) State Records Fiche 846-850. This series forms part of the Archives Resources Kit which can be used in many locations throughout New South Wales. Also microfilm copies of [7/6213] (1862-1904) State Records Reels 2657 and 1974, and microfilm copy of [8/3255-58] (4 August 1866-29 May 1913) State Records Reels 3044-3047 - available in reading room.

Perhaps Ros may be able to check for you if that John B GOOCH is ''your''  chap on one of her visits to the Archives.
