Charting software

I am looking for some software to draw family trees on my Mac.

Note I am not looking for a full genealogical database program like Family Tree Maker or similar. I already have several and have settled on one that I like. I know these can generate family tree diagrams, but I find they cannot be customised to my satisfaction.

I am looking for a simple drawing program which will enable me to draw rectangular text boxes, enter text and link them with straight lines. Coloured fills and coloured text would be helpful.

I have tried using the graphing options on Word, but the tools are rather primitive and there are size restrictions. I need to be able to generate pages bigger than A4 or A3.

I am not prepared to use Windows under any circumstances, so any suggestions for the Mac?

Powerpoint has charts.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

It's also possible in Excel.

Mac ,   So Keynote. Or if it’s just one family per page I use Pages and insert a Table, and the get rid of all the spreadsheet lines. But that doesn’t leave you with boxes.  I think Keynote is probably more what you are looking for.

I would help, but . . . .

I am not prepared to use Apple/Mac under any circumstances.
Neither will I countenance using any other Apple products - iPad, iPod, etc.

The best family tree charting program by far is TreeDraw.
If you are able to run Windows software under an emulator you should try it.

I totally agree Graham, but he/she does not want to run Windows under any circumstance so that in effect seems to exclude Treedraw run under a Windows emulator.

I suppose it depends on whether one wishes to use the best software or not  ;)

Many thanks for the helpful replies and the one not so helpful.

I specified Mac because that is the operating system I use, not to start some stupid cyber war about Mac and Windows. My experience with Windows during my working life is not good and that includes emulators.

I do not want to buy a Windows machine or indeed a Windows emulator. So I found the message from Kay to be most unwelcome and frankly rude and offensive. It would very much please me not to have read anything more from that particular contributor.

I have decided to go with the draw program in Open Office, which is free and does what I want.
