Great Barton, Suffolk - early 1700's birth records
« on: Friday 16 November 18 17:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi

How can I find out about somebody born in Great Barton around 1710.  Would I have to visit the parish in person or could I find the records online.  Have found 5 generations on the Long family from there but have drawn a blank trying to find James Long born around 1710.

Any help appreciated!

If the local history society (Great Barton History Society) can't help, you may need to go to the Suffolk Record Office (SRO), e.g. at  Bury St Edmunds, to search the register of baptisms or a transcript (which could well be easier to read) on microfiche or microfilm. Copies are also held at Ipswich and Lowestoft, and can be ordered for consultation at the Mormons' ubiquitous family history centres. More expensive options include purchasing a microfiche from the SRO or (when the library is re-opened after boiler repairs) visiting the Society of Genealogists in London (free for members).

Hi Joeyc1969,

There is another avenue you could pursue and that is to contact the Suffolk FHS (https://suffolkfhs.co.uk/index.php/information/search-services  who can undertake a search for you
at a minimal cost. I have used them in the past successfully.

However, have you considered he may not have survived for long as in the Suffolk Burial  index there is;
James Long buried 30-10-1710 Gt.Barton Holy Innocents.
also an alternative;
 James Long buried  16-1-01788   "     "         "            "         (PA = pauper)

Alas, not a good coverage at all for Suffolk!   I'm involved in a one name study of 'Scopes' and there were hundreds born in Suffolk - FreeReg have just 3 baptisms, 3 marriages and 4 burials for the whole of Suffolk!!
