Service Record - two dates for enlistment
« on: Friday 16 November 18 20:07 GMT (UK) »
i'm looking at the service record for Private 10575 Neil Tully Norman.  On the Statement of Services page it says:

Deemed to have enlisted: 2.3.1916, then below it says
Called up for Service: 7.3.1917

Why does it give two dates?

Wright (West Ham, Stratford, Cripplegate)
Widenstrom (Chicago and Minnesota)
Swain (Cripplegate, St Lukes)
Wolfe (St Giles in the Fields)
Willis (Gt. Leighs; Brentford)
Bryant (Bristol, Glos)
Searle (Kent/Surrey)
Keyworth (Yorkshire)
Biggs (Harrow Weald)
Collins (Harrow Weald and Wiltshire)
Langston (Harrow Weald)

This is related to the Military Service Act which brought conscription in 1916 and is explained here (note the 2 March 1916 date) https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/a-soldiers-life-1914-1918/enlisting-into-the-army/the-1916-military-service-act/

In his case from 2 March 1916 he was in the army, on the reserve and waiting call up which came a year later (see the bit about classes at the end) (as Jim says)

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

As MaxD says went into the 3rd. Reserve Batt. 3/2/16 & stayed in the UK until required on 7/3/17 when he was posted to the 1st. Reserve Batt. while awaiting posting overseas where he was posted to the 2nd. Infantry Batt. H.A.C. & sent overseas on 12/6/17 & joined his unit on the 27th.
Poor chap didn't last long after that.
If you don't have it already he was at a village called Ecoust Saint-Mein which is S. of Arras.
He was one of 3 men wounded while digging trenches.

Ecoust Saint-Mein is in square C.2 at the top of the page.
The blue lines are the newly dug trenches.

Thank you both for such a detailed explanation.

Where did you get the bit about him digging trenches?
