Ludwig Kley
« on: Saturday 17 November 18 13:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi , I was hoping for some help to find family of Ludwig Kley, according to documents in Tasmania, Australia he was born 18 July 1849, Cartzin, Pomerania, Germany. He arrived in Hobart, Tasmania in August of 1870 aboard the ship " Victoria " from Hamburg, aged 21. Also on board was Frederick Kley aged 26, wife Caroline and infant son Lurig. I can only assume Frederick would be brother or maybe cousin to Ludwig.
Any help appreciated
Craig

Hi Craig,

first things first. Lets find out where he possibly originated from.

On the ships list the native place is stated as Coslin Prussia (Cöslin (Köslin), Preussen)

His place of birth, Cartzin could be one of 4 places, all in county Köslin. (polish Koszalin)

According to a internet find - At the turn of the 18/19 century, Cartzin was renamed Karzin
http://www.territorial.de/pommern/koeslin/griebniz.htm
Umbenennung (Renamed)

    der Landgemeinde Cartzin in Karzin,
    des Gutsbezirke Cartzin in Karzin,
    des Amtsbezirke Cartzin in Karzin.

https://s.meyersgaz.org/search?search=karzin

Search results for [karzin]
Karzin 1) -now called - Karsina
Rg. with Vw.
Karzin, Bublitz, Köslin, Pommern, Preussen

Karzin 2)  -now called - Karsino
D. (Village)
Karzin, Schlawe, Köslin, Pommern, Preussen

Karzin 3) - now called - Karżcino
D. (with Ab. Heinrichshöhe) and Rg.
Karzin, Köslin, Pommern, Preussen

Karzin 4) -now called - Karsinka
Vw. (Residence or Farm)
Karzin, Belgard, Köslin, Pommern, Preussen

So digest that lot first.

Dave

The 1886 naturalisation application for Ludwig Kley aged 37 says born 18 July 1849 Cartzin, Pomerania, Germany. A notation on the document (img 5) questions the spelling and says "His ??ther spells his name Klie". Its not clear to me if it says father or brother or something else.

This could be the 1884 naturalisation application of Frederick

Born Caslen(?) Pomerania 13 Oct 1844

That reads Coslen, meaning Coslin, Cöslin (Köslin) polish Koszalin

Ok, from all of this wonderful information, the family name was spelt Klie as the notation reads ". His father " . Frederick listed as born Caslen and Ludwig in Cartzin. Has the family moved between births or is it just a different spelling? Would they have changed their surname to hide their identity and destination?
