avm - thank you for finding the link to the Todds for Ellen. I believe she at 16  in 1871 is the nursery maid at Warwick Square Westminster. When she married in 1876 she is described as a servant and they wed at hanover Square.

Eyesee - thank you for that one, will have to look at that.

Also found death of Emma Smith 1854 Westminster aged 1 and death of Edward Charles Westminster 1860 aged 2 - death certs being ordered I guess :)

In 1871 there is a Mary Ann L Smith aged 23 living with George and Ann Foulger?  - when Edward and Mary married one of the witnesses in James L Fowler --- more to look at.

Off to work now, thanks again everyone
Heather

Just a note re the Edward Charles Smith death - there were two boys with exactly this name born in Westminster in 1857 and both seem to have died young.  I think the death of yours might in fact be the Sep qtr 1857 death (aged 0), as he would have been 3 rather than 2 at the time of the 1860 death.

when Edward and Mary married one of the witnesses in James L Fowler --- more to look at.

His name was J.L. GAWLER.  If you look at the other marriages around that time you will see that he witnessed many of them.  The 1851 census shows that he was the parish clerk, so likely of no interest.

Hang on, there's a note in the margin about Ann.
I can make out "wife"?

Ancestry hates me these days, and I can’t get in at all today, but I vaguely remember there may have been one or more London marriages with father named as Edward William Smith, coal porter ???

Could be 2nd wife, with the beginning obscured?

It could be. I'll take your word! Not much is working properly for me today either!
Can't be totally sure about this chap, can we, and I can't see a marriage for Edward W + Ann.
And Ann's maiden name should not really be Main. Looks like it was probably Dale/Dael
Marriage, 20 Sep 1846, St Margaret Westminster
George Main, widower + Ann Dael, father Edd. Dael

Two children in the 1871 census for Edward W + Ann Smith
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBFS-W9D

Birth registration of one of them
Agnes Christabel Smith, Dec 1865, Westminster, mmn Dale

Baptism for her 16 October, born 16 September, parents Edward William + Ann, father a Labourer.
