Where is this location?
« on: Saturday 17 November 18 21:27 GMT (UK) »
I have just found a record in my tree, saying that a distant grandparent was born in "Brae" or "Braes" in the parish of New Monkland. Any idea as to where this is?

Thanks! ;D

I'm sure someone else will know, however there is a mention in a newspaper in 1828 of young woman's body being found "in the  Glen Braes, near the new Monkland church".  :-\

(An intriguing story where the husband was accused of murdering his wife, whilst in gaol he attempted to suicide, due to the shock of hearing his wife had been murdered and himself accused, only for the wife to then return home from a visit - he was fortunately stopped from harming himself and released. Though the identity of the murdered woman remained unsolved.)

Braes (a short row of cottages) is listed in the parish of New Monkland on Scotlands Places about a third down the page http://www.rootschat.com/links/01n1s/   and the actual book http://www.rootschat.com/links/01n1t/

Added - This looks like the cottages north of New Monkland https://maps.nls.uk/view/74427692#zoom=5&lat=3277&lon=7936&layers=BT

Thank you, thats fantastic and seems to add up with other birth locations!

Do you happen to know what year that book was written in?
