McKay/Wilson HEEEELLLLP!!!!
« on: Saturday 17 November 18 22:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello All, I have hit the wall with my great grandparents! I am sure about Elizabeth McCloy 1871-1963 and James McKay 1871 - ? were my great grandparents as my mum remembers. They married in 1903. James parents were Sutherland McKay and Janet Wilson. And then Sutherlands line goes cold. Could be Robert McKay and Jane ...... but I am really stumped. Any help appreciated!

They married in 1902

It was 1903

Haven't you downloaded a copy of the marriage cert from SP which will give both sets of parents names plus mothers maiden name?

Once confirmed - you can look for the parents marriages on SP and download their certs to get further back

So the 1903 marriage cert of James McKay born 1871 shows his father as Sutherland McKay - is that correct?

Have you found James on the 1881 census with a father of that name as I can't find an entry.

The only Sutherland McKay/Janet Wilson marriage was 1844

According to James McKays birth certificate Sutherland McKay and Janet Wilson married November 1860 Larkhall (Dalserf) but no marriage listed.

Searched for a marriage in 1860 in this area for Janet Wilson and found the marriage 27/11/1860 BUT Sutherland is shown as Sutherland Innes, son of Sutherland Innes and Jane Wishart.

Found Sutherland McKays death in 1874 and parents shown as Sutherland McKay and Jane Wishart.

So what's going on I don't know - Sutherland marries as Innes, father of same name also Innes, but after the marriage he becomes McKay until his death in 1874 when his father now shown as McKay also.

1871 census  as McKay states he was bc.1841 Hamilton, Lanarkshire but 1861 census he is Innes, bc.1840 Grangemouth, Stirling???

Well Annette, potentially it's because he didn't turn up to a court hearing and was outlawed and although I know about this and have court papers etc I cant be 100% sure that this is right. I hope it is though! First criminal in the family, and I'm Australian!!
