So was it Sutherland Innes the elder who changed his nameand son just followed suit ?

I have Lannarkshire McKAYs in mytree he could have chosen a less common name !

Think it was the elder. The first trial for stealing sheep happened in 1842 I think and he was jailed for a year after that. Then he stole the cake of soap and was due in court but outlawed. I dont know what year that was.

Wow that's amazing! I had a genealogist look into the family in 2012 and he found out that he had stolen a cake of soap and then tried to sell it on but the lady he tried to sell it to shopped him in. Hope that is correct bit not a hundred percent sure.
