CURRER WRIGHT (1741-1784) of Yorkshire & Northants
« on: Sunday 18 November 18 23:41 GMT (UK) »
Looking for marriage information (but welcome ANY information) for CURRER WRIGHT. The only marriage I've found is to Jane Clement in 1774 @ All Saints Northampton. But that record says he was a widower.

He also baptized a child named Thomas Wright in 1776 at All Saints with the mother's name of 'Joanna Wright' (although he was married to Jane Clement at that time). Any idea who Joanna might be?

Currer has been spelled Curra, Currah, Curry, Currie in different records but I believe Currer is correct. Thank you for your help!

Hello prairiegypsy,

Currer had two other children in Northamptonshire, William baptised 6 Sep 1778 in Welford, and Nathaniel born 18 Nov 1780 and baptised same day by the Castle Hill Independent Chapel in Northampton. Both wives are given as Jane.

No sign of another marriage, though.

The Currer family were lords of the manor in Kildwick in the 16th-18th centuries, and no doubt had relatives nearby too - a tree in TD Whitaker's 'History of Craven' shows one living in Ilkley in the 17th century, though none of that one's descendants. It's quite common in Yorkshire for a surname to be used as a forename in later generations.

Is it possible that Joanna was Currer Wright's first wife? One possibility might be that she died around the time of Thomas's birth, and they didn't get round to baptising him until after Currer had married Jane.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Oh my. Thank you ALL for these wonderful responses. Great information. ArthurK, your suggestion that Joanna was his first wife and died and Thomas's baptism was delayed makes perfect sense. I hadn't thought of that. Thank you! Thank you!
