Grandad Alfred's second world war service records help please
« on: Monday 19 November 18 12:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone
I’m after some help from the wonderful Roots chatters. I have recently received my grandfather’s second world war army records and I’m in the process of transcribing them for myself and other family members. Some of the pages are very easy to read and understand others have a lot of information on them but it is hard to follow all the abbreviations to understand where and what he was doing.
I have attached a section of his records and would like some help with the main text towards the bottom of the image.

I have other pages that I need help with but will post one at a time.

Thanks in advance

The left column is for the reference of the unit document that published the occurrence that comes in the next columns, it can be ignored.
Starting from the one marked 38/41.  Published by 11 Divisional Company Royal Army Medical Corps.  Posted to and joined this unit from No 2 Depot  RAMC and attached 181 [Battery] 65 Heavy Artillery Regiment Royal Artillery for all purposes.
Attached 182 [Battery] 65 etc
Granted 7 days privilege leave at leave rate with effect from (date)
181 [Battery] 65 Heavy Artillery Regiment Royal Artillery for all purposes.

Translation – (you have cut off the dates, the ones that relate are those usually to the right of the entry).  On 8 August 1941 he has been posted to the Anti-Aircraft (AA) Division from the RAMC Depot were he has been trained.  Specifically, he is with the RAMC Company that belongs to 11 AA Division and his specific unit is one of the batteries of 66 HAA Regt.  Later he moves to another battery of the same regiment.  He goes on leave (privilege is normal leave) with an allowance of money for food.  He is posted back to the battery he came from earlier.  65 (The Manchester Regiment) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA at that time was in the Orkneys/Shetland.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Thank you MaxD for your kind help. I will update my notes and post the next one. He originally was in the Gordon Highlanders at the start of the war and then transferred to the RAMC. During that time he was injured and hospitalised.

Here is the next page of my grandfather’s war records. Please could someone clarify what the letters at the end of first four lines are and what they represent they look like wef to me?
I can read most of this page but wondered what R.S stands for next to the date 22/1/42.

I presume his admittance to hospital is from one of the injuries he got during his service. Unfortunately, there is no record of his medical notes. Does anyone know where these were kept and where I would be able to access them?

Many thanks in advance for your kind help. I am learning so much about my grandfather, sadly he was one of those that never talked about the war.

"wef" is usually "with effect from"

It is not an abbreviation I have seen before or one that appears on any list I have seen.  However, it could be Taken on Ration Strength,  a variation of TOS - taken on strength which means essentially being added to the unit roll, in simple terms, he now belongs to the unit he is TOS, it does coincide with his arrival at 12 Holding Depot.  Ration Strength being the numbers of men for which the unit is allowed to draw rations.

It is a bit of a guess but makes sense in the context.  It is clearly an administrative entry that has no major meaning as far as his career is concerned.

This is a amended post to correct obvious earlier errors!

Thanks everyone for your input. I will type up the information and hopefully I have all the gaps covered. If not I’ll be back for some more help. I’m hoping to get this done before Christmas and pass it on as a present to family.
