WW! Military Records
« on: Monday 19 November 18 12:21 GMT (UK) »
Having a little trouble deciphering some poor quality 1914-18 records for my grandfather.

Can make out most, but those pesky army abbreviations are stumping me.

For example 16/7/16 posted from 1/7 West Riding Regiment to "a/c" and then on to 6th Reg WRR from 6/11/16.

Anyone any idea what "a/c" could be. Know that he was wounded twice - last time caused discharge, and that at some stage he was gassed.

Record sheet attached.

Many thanks
Bucks - Cadd, Howell, Ellard, Bennett, Smith (Hillesden, P Bissett), Mason (Edgcott)
Cheshire - Buckwright, Brearly (Stockport)
Lancs - Hall (Oldham)
Lincs - Jackson (Epworth), Foster, Jeffrey, Lincoln, Harley, Eastgate (Bennington) Maddison, Douthwaite, Dobbs & King (Caistor), Hill (Thornton)
Essex - Wright (Wigboroughs), Demmond & Rich (Layer Haye), Harrington (Grt Baddow), Tuley, Crosby, Horsnail, Keeling (Hanningfields & Woodhams)
Warwks - Claydon, Hewens & Arnold, (Tysoe)
Ireland- King Mayo

tried a couple of times to post a close up jpg - with different file name - keep getting

"Sorry! There is already an attachment with the same filename as the one you tried to upload. Please rename the file and try again."

Will try later - can any Admin help?

No need for a close up.
It would be better to say who he is so we can look at it ourselves.

The file name must be unique WITHIN RootsChat! ;D
I usually add my initials to the name part - e.g. file1.doc becomes file1-KG.doc.

OK
I'll give the full record:
19/10/15-attested into the 3/7 (training Batt.). As this was a Territorial Batt. he had to then be embodied making him a full timer.
16/7/16- posted to the 1/7th. & sent overseas.
23/9/16- posted back to the UK. No reason given.
25/9/16- is the anomaly. It looks like a/c possibly ass. Commander.
6/11/16- posted to the 1/6th. but remains in the UK.
20/1/17- posted overseas to the 1/6th.
21/1/17- arrives at Base Depot for onward posting. All men leaving or arriving in France had to go to their base Depot at Rouen or Camieres.
22/1/17- arrives at his Batt.
9/2/17- posted to the 10th. Underneath it says Auth. Army Order 204-1916.
Up to this date it was unlawful to transfer men from a TF Batt. to the Regular Army which the 10th. was.
This order allowed it to happen.
5/3/17- back in the UK (possibly from being gassed. The 10th. were shelled in the trenches at Zillebeke Belgium 20/2/17)
24/8/17- posted to the 3rd. (training Batt.)
2/11/17- back at Base Depot France & posted to the 9th.
4/11/17- posted to the 2/7th.
5/12/17- back in the UK & posted to his depot which is administrative as he would have gone to hospital.
28/9/18- discharged.
On the next page:
27/11/17- hospital admission 16888- GSW.
This would be from the action at Bertincourt/Bourlon Wood on the 20/21st.
He was 1 of 59 wounded.

Brilliant, thanks Jim.

Have the War Diaries for the units, just now need to comb through them for more detail.

We went to France and Belgium in May on holiday and visited CWGs for 3 great uncles and 3 cousins and others. Grandad Harry survived but, as with many did not speak if it. He emigrated in the 1960s and I never saw him from age of 8 years old.

Only recently have been able to piece together his story. Know he was gassed, had a shrapnel wound in the chin and the GSW - I remember the scar - in wrist which invalided him out.

Will pass on your expert analysis to family.

Cheers
