Why a surname next to place of birth in 1861 census?

Related to above thread, in the 1861 Census for Charles Payne 36 Bn Sussex living at 9 One Hose, Waterloo, his wife Mary Anne Payne has "Hussey" next to Lambeth as her place of birth. She was living with a Hussey previously but never married.

What were the reasons the census writer would add that name, Hussey?

I think that it actually says "Surrey" which is the county associated with Lambeth.  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

And if you look at the actual image - RG9 334 folio 86 page 27 - there is another instance of the same addition on that page, plus 3 on the previous page, and others on earlier pages.  ;D

If we're all singing from the same song-sheet (RG9/334 f86 p27), the address is 75 Webber Row, St George Southwark.

Agree with BumbleB, the word in your snip is Surrey.
