Marriage surname but calling self single?
« on: Monday 19 November 18 21:25 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor, Eugene (known as Jane) Smeatham (maiden) married at age 15 to Louis Mouna. In the 1891 census (Liverpool) Eugene is 17 years old and named as "Jane Mouna" but named also as being "single". Was wondering why she was named single even though she wasn't? Thanks for any help.

My first guess, based on the principle you should always presume incompetence rather than conspiracy, is an enumerator's error.
Simons Barrett Jaffray Waugh Langdale Heugh Meade Garnsey Evans Vazie Mountcure Glascodine Parish Peard Smart Dobbie Sinclair....

Do you know any reason why her husband wouldn't be living with her at the time?

She is living with her parents so probably as has been said it is just an error.
In 1901, her husband is a Ship’s Steward.
What occupation did he have on marriage?
If it was the same, he was probably working at sea.

Yes, this is most likely an enumerator error, just look at the entry immediately above this lass, i.e. look to her mum's entry.  The enumerator was having trouble with his quill's nib .. and was also not exactly careful with how he recorded her surname - as it certainly does not look like Smeatham to me

I'd say an error by the enumerator my great grandmother is listed as Rose Watson on the 1939 register and is listed as married to William. But I have William and Rose's marriage certificate and they didn't marry until 1940.
