Rory O’Moore Glasnevin 1922
« on: Monday 19 November 18 22:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello, in the St Patrick’s corner of Glasnevin is a Celtic Cross bearing in Gaelic words relating to Rory O’Moore, Sub-commandant 4th ( or 5th) Brigade Dublin South IRA October 1922. This gentleman appears to be related to my Grandmothers family. I don’t know anything about him. Can anyone help please. Thank you.

That doesn't look correct
William Bernard in 1911

Doesn't have a son Rory or a daughter Hilda. 7 children living and 7 listed. Unless one of the boys called himself Rory.

I was just going to post that.

Bit odd isn't it, William B must not have filled out the form in 1911.

Oh you lovely people! This is indeed the chap I was referring to.....even though I mangled my dates.....Hilda Blake was my Grandmother, see passed away in 1979. One of her sons, Walter, was my father. I was brought up in the U.K. When my Dad passed away (in Dublin), I arranged to have him interred in Glasnevin. It was a very difficult time, as my Mum was dying of cancer at the same time (she died 3 months after Dad), so my thought processes were a bit hazy. I had no idea where my Grandmother was buried. Two of my Uncles very kindly took me to my granny’s grave, after dads interment. Seeing the memorial was a real surprise. The stone and grave were in disrepair.....so, when I could, I arranged for the cross to be cleaned and my gran & uncle Ernest to have a new stone put on. The records office at Glasnevin showed a Robert Moore as being in the grave....but that didn’t tally with ‘Rory’. I read that Rory O’Moore was a great figure in Ireland’s history and wondered if his name had been taken out of respect, by one of grans family. You lovely people! You have taken me a step further to understanding and knowing my family - thank you.

This is likely to be the birth of Rory- Roderick William Moore b Jan 1893

Presumably Rosy should be Rory in the census.

Thank you so much. I’ll check it out. I have little knowledge of my Grans family....siblings etc, other than a Johanna & Robert being in the same grave and the grave owner being a Joseph O’Moore..and an address on Pearse Street, Dublin. The ‘O’ in front of Moore seems to have been dropped at some stage. It’s so kind of you....I’ll check out the link. Thank you.
