Royal Navy Sto1
« on: Tuesday 20 November 18 23:16 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help please, I am trying to find any information on K45497 James Williams STO1. Royal Navy,  He was born Blaneafon, Monmouthshire 1896, initially he enlisted in the 2 Mon Regiment but did not serve for long before being  discharged. sometime later he volunteered for the R.N.
I believe he was married and had a son born circa 1916. i am hoping their might be a mention of his first wife.
He emigrated to Australia in 1921 and remarried there.
Any information on him would be much appreciated. He was my Great Uncle.

many thanks

Ken Williams

Can you confirm that this is a new query and hasn't been covered in your earlier incarnation?

Royal Navy records seldom contain any information on next of kin.

The record of K45497 shows a birthdate of 17 April 1892 (not 1896 per your query) and does mention previous army service.

There is an army record for James Williams (1179, 2nd Monmouthshire Regiment) born Blaenavon circa April 1893. He joined as a part timer in 1910 and was discharged in November 1915 after serving in France where he was wounded. Parents Thomas and Mary Jane of 2 Upper Brick Yard, Blaenavon. No mention of a spouse. In the 1911 census he is Jim Williams aged 16 so there is some mystery over his birth year.

Hi Ken,

If you can not access RootsChat you can request a new password yourself by clicking on the "forgotten password" option where you sign in or clicking on the red button that says "contact support" for help. When you create a new profile you loose access to notifications from your other profile.

I can see that you have accessed both profiles, are both email addresses still in use or do you want me to put your new email your old profile ?

Regards

Sarah

His army overseas service was with 2 Monmouthshire from 5 Nov 1914 to 15 Mar 1915.  The war diary for that period is at:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7352173
Although he was wounded in Feb 1915, his discharge was at termination of his engagement.  He had signed for 4 years in 1910 with caveats that he would be embodied if war broke out and that he would have to serve an extra year.  Both came into effect!  Conscription had not yet started so he was completely free to leave.
https://www.naval-history.net/Index0-1914.ht wil be helpful in finding out about the vessels he served on in the RN.
