William Swans in Hadstock
« on: Wednesday 21 November 18 11:25 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone help please?

There were 2 William Swans born in Hadstock around the same time
1. b.1807 to Robert Swan and Mary (Scotcher)
2. b.1806 to Samuel Swan and Mary (Bye)

one William married Sarah (also with the surname Swan) in 1827 Hadstock
the other married Rebecca Pearson 1829

I'm interested in the one that married Sarah. They were given a removal order in 1829 and moved to Woodditton in Cambridgeshire.

There were also 3 Sarah Swans born around the same time
1. b.1804 to Robert Swan and Mary Scotcher
2. b.1806 to John Swan and Alice Marsh
3. b.1807 to John Swan and Jane Free

How do I confirm which William and which Sarah?
I checked on SEAX website a while ago (I signed up for a week's membership) and no details of the marriage records came up.

Thank you

For what it is worth, the William who married Rebecca is:

45 in 1851 (b 1805-6)
55 in 1861 (b 1805-6)
67 in 1871 (b 1803-4)

...which looks more likely to correspond to the March 1806 baptism than the June 1807 one.

I also note that in 1841 Rebecca and the children (William not with them) were enumerated in Hadstock very close to a Bye family, which might be related if that was his mother’s maiden name.

Why were your Swans removed to Cambridgeshire, if born in Hadstock?

It makes sense re the census ages.

On the 1851 Census (the one you are referring to?) they are also living next to John and Jane Swan (are they from the other Swan family I wonder?) It seems they all lived in close proximity to each other

The removal order says that
William, Sarah and their daughter Lucy were removed from Hadstock for ‘not having gained a legal
settlement there, nor having produced any certificate acknowledging them to be settled elsewhere’.

How very odd. I have no idea why a couple born and married in the parish would need to do anything more to “gain a legal settlement there”.

Anyway I see that your William and Sarah Swan are both 43 in 1851 - consistent with birth 1807-8.

Sarah “Swann” is widowed by 1881: 74 b Hadstock (in the household of her son James).

So, from the census ages it seems like William was born 1807 to Robert and Mary and Sarah was born 1807 to John and Jane

The removal document is 1 page long, I just had another look, it basically says they didn't produce a certificate and they didn't gain a legal settlement. I didn't understand the reasons.
