Help Identifying Location
« on: Thursday 22 November 18 01:06 GMT (UK) »
This is from 1758 "Massachusetts, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records" and reads "David (struck through) Brown of (Need help here) & Abigail of Sudbury were married..." and I'm trying to figure out where David Brown came from. Looks kind of like "Portland"?

Yes, I read it as Portland.

My first thought was Rutland and closer examination hasn't changed that.

Two forms of r are used in the clip.  One is seen in Brown, Were and married.

The other can be seen most clearly in Sudbury.

Neither matches the supposed r of Portland.  This letter is clearly a u.

The tiny circle is something else, in my opinion - part of a flourish.

Can you find another R in the document & post a clip?  It would be good to see another example.

Rutland, MA is about 35 miles from Sudbury. Seems very feasible.

What's the name below that's partially cut off?  It looks similar to the first letter.

I am going with Rutland as well, but would like to see more of the writing to confirm.

I would say Rice or Price.

I also vote for Rutland.
