James Ball - Donnington Wood
« on: Thursday 22 November 18 14:40 GMT (UK) »
I have just traced my GG Grandparents, James & Mary Ball to Donnington Wood.
James was born circa 1820 & Mary circa 1821.

This is all I know so far, as I have only found them in a census for 1891 by which time they had moved to Longton, staffordshire and have one daughter Emma circa 1853 and a Granddaughter circa 1888.

Would anyone be able to shed any light on where I go from here?

Many thanks for any help you  can offer.

It looks like the family were in Donnington Wood in 1851 (HO107/1998 folio 101 pg3).

Noah, shown as age 5, shows the mother's maiden name as Hayward on the GRO site.

The district was a big coal mining area, but is now more well known for England's football training centre.

What about this family in 1871? It seems too close to be a coincidence.

15 Gate St, Stoke-on-Trent (RG10/2875 folio 31 pg 4):

Noah Ball, Head, Mar, 50, Coal Miner, Salop
Mary do, Wife, Mar, 50, , do
Noah do, Son, Unm, 24, Coal Miner, do
John do, Son, Unm, 22, do do, do
Emma do, Daur, Unm, 18, Transferer of Pottery, do
James do, Son, Unm, 12, Scholar, Staffordshire Longton

There's a matching birth registration for Emma in Q4 of 1853, MMN Hayward.

I think I've found Emma in 1881:
4 Gold St, Stoke-on-Trent (RG11/2733 folio 10 pg 14)
In the house of Charles Brain, 36, China Jiggerer
Emily Ball, Boarder, , 26, China Throwers Wheel Turner, Salop Dunnington Wood
