Hello,
This post consists of a request for information, if available, for a mother and three sons transported both to VDL and Victoria........there is confusion as to the surname between BAYCROFT and BEACROFT, but the former seems the acceptable version. However, I should add that my specific interest lies in the three sons. The bare details are:
(1): Mother: Mary BAYCROFT, born 1806, Stockport, Cheshire and in 1848 a Widow. Tried
Chester 06/01/1848. Transported for 7 years aboard “Tory”, arrived Hobart
06/08/1848. Her VDL convict documentation is very sparse and not enlightening.
(2): Son: Luke BAYCROFT born 1831, Stockport, Cheshire. Sentenced Chester 27/11/1843 to
7 years transportation. Eventually sailed aboard “Racliffe (2)”, arrived Hobart
12/11/1848. Again, the convict documentation is sparse and unenlightening, but The
Cornwall Chronicle on 04/01/1851 confirmed his sentence had expired.
(3): Son: Charles BAYCROFT, born 1829, Stockport, Cheshire. Sentenced Chester
10/01/1844 to 7 years transportation. Eventually sailed as an “Exile” aboard “Joseph
Somes”, arrived Port Phillip (Geelong) 24/09/1847. Refused to take reasonable wages –
and sent onshore to find own way.
(4): Son: John BAYCROFT, born 1833, Stockport, Cheshire. Sentenced Chester 12/11/1842 to
7 years transportation. Eventually sailed aboard “Lord Auckland”, arrived Hobart
15/11/1844. gained Certificate of Freedom 24/11/1849. His first Station of Gang was
Point Puer and thus not regarded as an adult convict initially.
I would be delighted if SKS could offer any help in determining what happened to these four people.......TROVE has been researched but no effective details.
For the moment,
