As no central Personal Merchant Navy records were kept between 1857 and 1913, the only way to trace which vessel your man served on when the Twins were born, is to back track via Crew Agreements. Most Crew Agreements give the name of the mans previous ship. As all the Archives , mainly MHA, British National Archives, National Maritime Museum catalogue C/A's by Official Number you will find this website useful.

It can be a somewhat expensive and long drawn out exercise but with a little luck. Possible.
All the crew agreements you need should be at MHA, so use their excellent research service.
