Where do I go from here?
« on: Friday 23 November 18 10:38 GMT (UK) »
Emma Richards born 1831 (c) Castle Precincts, Bristol, parents Philemon and Emma Richards.  Can find very little information on Emma, but did find a possible death in 1846.  Obtained via the GRO a death certificate for Emma which is rather disappointing. Writing hard to read, witness present at death is a Mary Ann Richards who I have no idea who she could be.  The only encouraging bit of information was the area  Castle Precincts, Bristol.
So where do I go from here?

Should mention she is on the 1841 census with her 2 brothers George and William and father Philemon.

Any help will be appreciated

I would say the witness was someone from the father’s family given the surname.
Perhaps you could trace that family and work forwards. Not much help but perhaps a straw for you to grasp.

Thanks Viktoria,  I agree with you and can find nobody in that time zone that she would fit into, thought it could be George's wife but he married Eliza Lewis and William went off to the USA in the 1850's single. Emma's mother died in 1831.

But I will go though the Richards family again.  Should mention that I am descended from the Richards family so have done quite a lot of research into the family but that does not mean I could of over looked somebody.

Thanks for replying

It would be interesting
to know the cause of death of a 16 year old.
My mother’s 16 year old sister died February 1910 from tuberculosis.
She was the darling of the family,Blanche, her mother had given birth to her last baby in January of that year,Blanche died just after, then one of grandma’s baby twin grandsons, then the new baby Irene, then the other baby grandson.
All in a few weeks.
Let us know if that is what you wish to do.
Viktoria.

How sad, Viktoria, Life was hard so many of us can come up with similar stories.   Having another look at the certificate death was on the 5th February 1846 St Peter's hospital. Cause of death, now I am only guessing the writing is dreadful. Plictisis?? 4 months ulceration. Intestines? 1 month certified. Sounds like a horrible death.

Could it be pthisis ? that is another name for tuberculosis, usually of the lungs.

It can be in other sites than the lungs.
Glands, intestines etc and in that case I imagine there would be ulceration.
Even Tubercular meningitis.
The usual cause of death  with   pthisis in the lungs is bleeding from the lungs which comes from the mouth, unstoppable as the lung tissue breaks down . A horrible death.
Can’t remember the name for it,haemo———.
Have a good look,at the word starting with p ,registrars did not allways get the correct spelling, which causes us trouble when researching.
Thanks. Viktoria.
