I was thinking on similar lines to Viktoria.

Haemoptisis,the spitting up of blood,I feel there ought to be an h there (haemopthisis) but
the dictionary gives the above spelling.
As you say a lot of suffering.
People were so pale and delicate looking and girls especially had luminescent skin.They looked lovely——for a short time.
