Admitted 17/7/1898 discharge 27/8/1898 ...died

David Guthrie was in the Liverpool Asylum New South Wales Australia  for the infirm and destitute and Was single

While all this NSW info was coming in I was busy on SP:

THOMAS Guthrie and Margaret Mann were married on 17 Jan 1836 Forfar

David Guthrie was born to JAS Guthrie and Margaret Mann on 17 May 1837 and bapt. 4 June 1837 Forfar

Hi Rosie,
 This certainly looks like him in NSW in 1898.

I wonder if there is any evidence of his passage to NSW around 1878?  The transition from Veterinary to Blacksmith ( he went into partnership with his Master Blacksmith father in 1871) is also a bit of a puzzle

In answer to the second part of the above post I think the answer is that most of a vets. work at that time was to do with horses.

There are a few records on immigration for a D Guthrie round about 1874-1879 but not much information  on the records to like it with your David ...As William  said most probably worked with horses
