How to research District Assylum, Inverness admission & records?
« on: Friday 23 November 18 21:57 GMT (UK) »
Only 15 minutes ago discovered my great, great grandmother's death through the helpful advice of another forum member. She had disappeared after the 1881 census from her family home in Edderton and I couldn't locate her though there were hints via other family records that she outlived her husband.

She had been admitted to the District Asylum at Inverness where she died in 1913 after many years of senile decay, brain disease.

Could someone advise me on how to go about accessing her records as I'd like to know more details of her story, how she went from wife, mother, grandmother to such a sad end.

Cheers,
Col  :)

Col, you could try following up here www.highlifehighland.com/archives-service/inverness-district-asylum/

You are outside of the 100yr privacy rules so hopefully you should have full access to any records there may be for her.

Added: Some additional details here https://historic-hospitals.com/2017/03/25/inverness-district-asylum-former-craig-dunain-hospital/

Thanks Monica. I visited the Highland Heritage Centre back in May while staying at Inverness a fortnight as a base for exploring the highland haunts of my Frasers. While I discovered some interesting bits and pieces about my dad's family I wish I'd known about my g g grandmother's circumstances then. Murphy's Law.

You could try contacting them via email perhaps and ask for some help with this?

I think this must be Ann in 1901 from what you now have:

Ann Fraser, 70, Blacksmith's wife, patient, b. Edderton, ross-shire
Iverness District Lunatic Asylum, Kinmylies, Inverness

Also showing there in 1891, housewife aged 61.

Yes, Monica, I'll send an email. The staff were lovely, helpful when I was there recently so fingers crossed we 'll work something out.

Those records would have referred to Ann. One strange thing though is the "b. Edderton" reference which is where she resided; born Inveravon, Moray. I'll look up those censuses.

Thank you for your help Monica.

Cheers,
Col  :)

More info for you to work through here www.oldscottish.com/asylum-patients.html!

They have an index of names for the work they have collated but couldn't easily see any reference to your Ann. Worth maybe also making enquiries?

Thanks again Monica. Followed the newest link from you and found her under "Ann Fraser or Grigor" but the years of her record are only 1888 - 1893. For 6 pounds I get 3 general register images, then I can go further and obtain doctor's report etc. I think I'll check out both sites re costs and  more importantly what records they hold.

At least I know her likely admission date was 1888.

Cheers,
Col  :)
