Stuck - Great Grandmother Agnes Christina McCabe Born 1907
« on: Friday 23 November 18 23:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

Hit a roadblock doing my family tree.
My grandmother Agnes McCabe born November 1907
Only record I can find is Dublin workhouse with her mother Ellen (Nellie)McCabe.
Then nothing until her marriage in 1928 to John Kenny.
I think she may have been in an orphanage.
What are my options ? Can I search orphanages .
In 1911 census is a Agnes McCabe age 3 living with James Spence can't find any connection to Spence.
Appreciate any pointers here

Hi and Welcome   :D

Have you looked at the full census record?  Bridget and Agnes were the nieces of James SPENCE.

Agnes' marriage tells you that she was the adopted daughter of Bernard ANDERSON.

I cannot see a birth registration for her, have you found one?

I can see some family trees which suggest that her birth is the one registered in 1908 in Co. Antrim, however that Agnes is here in 1911 with her family:

What is the date / details of the Dublin workhouse record you have? What information was given there on Ellen/Nellie - married, single, other children, etc...

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1952/04492/4179974.pdf
This must be Bernard Anderson's death - informant is daughter Agnes Kenny. He was 75 in 1952, and a carter (as he was at her marriage).

none to a Bridget
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Gosh thank you for replies.  😀
Yes my grandmother was adopted by Bernard Anderson. She only remembered her teen years with him . No female.
Bernard married Anne Gorman in 1902 ..seems they never had children. Dont know what happened Ann. I can't find death cert. Bernard served with Dublin Fussillers until 1920 .
I've search the Antirm Agnes and its a different family.
My grandmother remembers being in an orphanage .
The work house records are from 1908 with mother Ellen McCabe.
Anyone know how I can search orphanage records?
How would a man Bernard Anderson get to adopt a child of 11 years old.
