34 Huddleston Street, Monkwearmouth Shore
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 01:56 GMT (UK) »
In the 1881 census my 3rd Great Grandmother, Sarah Hatch (nee Cole) was living at 34 Huddleston Street in Monkwearmouth Shore and her occupation was shown as Shopkeeper (Ref RG11/5007 Folio 21 Page 35 Schedule 194).

Could someone please tell me if this address was a shop and, if so, what type.

Cheers, Doug

Looking at the occupations of the head of household in neighbouring properties, my first thought was that Sarah did not live in a shop, however on earlier pages, on Huddleston Street, there is a Tavern, a Tailor and a Grocer, so perhaps No.34 was a shop.

I think trade directories might help you.

What was her occupation in earlier censuses? Did she appear in the 1891 by any chance?

I will see if I can find anything to help.

Here is Huddleston Street:

(Now gone sadly)

Old-maps.co.uk might have a more detailed map showing street numbers.

You can see 34 Huddleston Street on this 1955 map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/440298/557658/13/101329
Change the zoom level if necessary.

Sunderland & Daily Echo & Shipping Gazette, 2 Mar 1938

An article about "Clearance Orders, County Borough of Sunderland" includes -

"... ordering the demolition of the buildings described in the Schedule ...

SCHEDULE
On the North and Northwest by Hamilton Street, Parish Rooms and yard attached, Look Out Hill, vacant site No. 5 Hedworth Street, and 34 Huddlestone Street ..."

34,35,36,37,39 Huddleston Street were still there in Sept 1939.
It was just after WW2 that several streets close to the North Sands Shipyard, including Huddleston Street, were bought by J.L. Thompson and the houses demolished.
You can see the difference on this map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/440298/557658/13/100765

In the 1902 Directory a Mrs. Emma Escourt, is listed at the address, under "Shopkeepers", so I would assume it was just a general dealers.

Thanks to everyone for the great information and suggestions as to where to look for more.

Ruskie, in answer to your question, Sarah did not show an occupation in any census before 1881 and she died in 1887.

Her husband, William, was a mariner from 1841 to 1871 and died in May 1871 at 27 Topliff Row (their address in the 71 census).
