Double checked - Nestfield was wrongly trancribesd as Westfield in 1891  ::)

In 1881, Thomas Bewick was at Grocer's Shop, 77 Nestfield Street.

In 1891 he was at 77/79 Nestfield Street.

Just to say that I don't see him in any Directories after 1894, as A.C. has found. Will now check newspapers.

Simeon Barker, grocer, appears in the 1902 and 1914 Dirctories at that address. Nothing before.

Thank you all for your help.

As you can imagine, just putting Thomas Bewick into Google results in vast number of hits for the wood engraved of the same name, and nothing for the grocer. Checking the newspapers is very similar.

I have tried the historic directories, and only found the one, of 1894, but I will have another look.

I just have to work out the best way to phrase the query, to get only the person of interest.

Again, many thanks.

AC

Darlington library, Local Studies Section, has a good range of Trade and Street directories. As you have most details it might be worth putting in a look-up request for anyone visiting the library, or email them directly. The staff used to be extremely helpful and do these free of charge, but under the current extreme financial pressures I'm not sure what might be charged.

Regards,
Colin

Colin, thank you for that thought. It just did not occur to me to contact the library, partly because I was not aware that there was a local library.

I will search them out, and see how things go.

barryd, that is very interesting. Being in Australia, Sydney, to me those house prices look very reasonable, but, by the same token, I have no idea of the area, so I do not know if they are good for there.
