Trying to find Wellington Place, Back Road in Tower Hamlets
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 12:43 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody help me?
I'm trying to find where Wellington Place, Back Road was in Tower Hamlets, London.
I have a William Gurner Jones, a Watchmaker, Jeweller and Photographer at this address in  1851 - 1861.
Any help or location map welcomed.

I haven't checked an old map, I'm currently on a small tablet, but there is currently a Wellington Way halfway between the North East corner of Tower Hamlets cemetery and Bow Road Underground Station. I would imagine your location was in that immediate area.

If you have William on the census at that address, look at the enumerator route on page one to narrow down the search area. You can also look at the "neighbours" in the hope of finding a street which still exists today (or which you can find on an old map) to give you a starting point. There are a lot of old maps which may show the address once you know where to look.

I can't see a Wellington Place in the vicinity of what is currently Wellington Way (but used to be Wellington Road) as per Martin's suggestion, but I did not look thoroughly, and if it was a small place it may not appear anyway:

I have to sign off now or I would have a better scout around for you.

I'm sure someone will find it for you.  :)

The census street index shows it's in St George in the East, part of the north side of Back Road.

Back Road later became Cable Street.
