Opinion and help please
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 12:56 GMT (UK) »
My great Uncle was born in Tryddyn in Flintshire in 1872. I have his birth certificate and can find him in sthe 1881 and 1891 censuses. He then disappears. I have recently received some old photographs and on the backs of 2 it says 'Arthur's Uncle Jack in Stockport'. I have found a John Edwards living in Stockport and his dob is correct except it has been mistranscribed as 27 Oct 1872 instead of 29 Oct.
Arthur was my father.
This means the name was changed from Adam to John/Jack. Adam's father was John.
Can anyone help with the house which has quite distinctive brickwork. I cannot find Adam/John/Jack in 1901 or 1911 and he could have been living elsewhere.
I haven't put this post in Flintshire or Denbighshire as yet.
Thank you for any help or suggestions.

Sorry I can't help, only to say there used to be lots of houses like the ones in your photograph in that part of Cheshire/Lancashire, mainly larger than the back to back terraced houses and sometimes quite grand houses.  As a child I used to call the bricks "swimming bath bricks" because that's what they looked like to me.  ::)

Bit confused with the names - what is the birth name of said great Uncle?

Do you know what year the photograph was taken, is great Uncle the older gentleman?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

He was born Adam Edwards.
My Mum and Dad are with Adam/John/Jack.
I would guess 1935 to 1937. He was in the army 1939.

As this looks like a 1930s image have you thought of looking on the 1939 register for the family to see where they were living.

Hi Carol
I did look at the 1939 census which according to Find my Past shows him living in 31 Castle St Stockport. When I looked at Google maps it did not look anything like the photo. As it happens I now used Ancestry and it is 31 HARDcastle Street and it looks the same as the photo. John Edward's occupation is shown as retired grocer. He is married to Laura (Annie) and I have not yet traced the marriage.
Thanks

The picture is a very good match for the houses in Hardcastle Road, and the reflection of the trees in the front door suggests it might be one of the ones opposite Edgeley Park.

However, it can't be the current No. 31, as there's a passageway immediately to the left separating it from No. 29.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I agree it looks odd but the brickwork ties in and I am guessing there was some sort of door for the passageway???!!!
