The village of Coleby is confusing Me.
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 13:06 GMT (UK) »
Local history knowledge wanted, this has been bugging Me for many years, I keep coming back to it, but never managed to pin anything down,

1911. Arthur Robert Lanes , ( my Great Gtanddad ) born  21st April 1878 at Coleby.
is living in a 4 room place in Coleby with his wife and some children, He is a farm laborer.

on the census listing He is three  dwellings up from the Mill , called ( Coleby Mill near Lincoln )

on google map I think the old mill was across the main road from Coleby village,

so would this mean He was not in the actual village of Coleby  ???

also in 1891 , Blind Lane , Coleby ???

also 1881  Blacksmith lane, Coleby ??  have not been able to pin the area of these two places down.

I do not need information :) on the family , I have that , just were they called home  :)

The mill can be seen on this map. Zoom out a few times to see the detail:-

https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/498979/360127/12/100670

It is isolated from the village, so the next few addresses could be on the edge of the village.

The Postcode for the mill is LN5 0AA. The Mill House is still there

David,  thank you so much for your help.

I am not able to view maps because I would need to pay a subscription,

dare not use anymore of my savings on my research  ;)

You don't need to have a subscription to view the maps at certain levels. i don't have one either and am able to see sufficient detail for the mill and Blind Lane etc.

As David advised in reply #1 use the zoom out button top left of the map a few times and you will be able to see the map perfectly. You do not need a subscription!

You can see a similar old map on the National Library of Scotland site, which is completely free:

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15&lat=53.1301&lon=-0.5244&layers=6&b=1

With the one I've selected you can move the slider in the panel on the left to change from old map to new. The links above the map let you choose either a simple old map or side-by-side old and new. In any view you can zoom in and out and drag the map around as you wish.

With the old maps you can choose a variety of scales and ages, and with the new ones there are also a number of options including satellite imagery.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Arthurk - thanks for that map website.  I've taken a look and it looks like it's going to be very useful.
